'We need to have a gutsy discussion' about increasing GST

Sky News contributor Peter Switzer says if he "didn't have to worry about the politics of it all", he would push for an increase to the GST.

Mr Switzer said "the Kiwis" place 15 per cent GST on their products and it "hasn't really hurt their economy".

"Unless Labor and the Coalition agree on GST reform, we're not going to see it," he said.

"I think we need to have a gutsy discussion."

Mr Switzer also suggested doing away with payroll tax and the removal of stamp duty on properties.
