Foreign Minister Marise Payne on Sunday announced she would push for an investigation into the genesis of the virus and Beijing’s handling of the initial outbreak.
"Good on Scott Morrison and Marise Payne, that's all I can say," Mr Clennell told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
"There's got to be an investigation".
Mr Clennell said the world must know if COVID-19 had stemmed as a result "from the wet market or from an act or from an accidental thing in a lab".
"We've got to know what was kept secret ... China's got to be held to account like any other government".
