Q: Which resort did you stay at?
A: The W in Maldives
Q: You mentioned getting a good deal... can you explain?
A: Rates were lower since the W just opened back up in the beginning of October. Plus, Billy’s sister works for Marriott so we got a discounted rate. Full transparency (because I know people are curious): we only paid $159 a night for our overwater villa. We never could have afforded this otherwise.
Q: Were you two the only ones staying there?
A: Nope, but it felt like it sometimes! There were only like 20 guests (at least that is all we saw).
Q: How were you able to travel during COVID? Do you have to quarantine when you come back?
A: We had to have a negative COVID test (PCR) within 72 hours of departing in order to come to the Maldives. We were not required to quarantine when we returned but Billy and I worked from home until we got a negative test as a precaution.
Q: Did you feel safe while traveling during a pandemic?
A: Very! Everyone was wearing masks everywhere we went (Turkey, Maldives, and the entire plane rides). The cleaning and sanitizing at the W was flawless.
Q: How were you able to take days off from teaching to travel?
A: I got my leave approved by my administration. We only get 2 personal days each year but we can also bank sick leave. Honestly, I don’t even know how exactly it comes out of my leave (I just put it in the system and it figures it out) but I’ve also taken unpaid days in the past (in my old county) to take a trip. Personally, I think it’s atrocious that teachers in some places can’t take vacations during the year. We are human and don’t live to work. Vacations shouldn’t be determined by your career choice.
