Red Bull Reveals They Have F1 Exit Clause Honda’s decision to leave F1 after 2021 seemed a bit abrupt to many especially since Red Bull team principal Christian Horner had been asked about it just a week ago and he appeared to be rather hopeful that the partnership with Honda would continue. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has now revealed they had known about the possibility of Honda leaving F1 among other things while speaking to Laola1

Red Bull Reveals Time Frame For Decision On Future Beyond 2021

Marko began by explaining their approach to the options they have now that Honda have confirmed that they won’t be staying in F1 beyond 2021

“All options will be sorted through and then Red Bull will decide what happens next. I repeat: we sort, present a concept, then a decision is made. We will research all possibilities”

He then explained why Horner was hopeful just a week ago and divulged that the top brass at Red Bull had known about Honda’s possible exit a lot earlier

“We are working in all directions because we had known about Honda's decision for a long time. Mr. Horner is a team principal, but not involved in strategic matters. Mr. Mateschitz and I have known for a long time”

He then gave a timeframe of when they came to know that Honda was considering leaving F1

“Long ago. During the current season”

He then explained how they could still leave F1 if they wanted to despite having signed the Concorde Agreements but added that it is not the priority right now

“We can cancel the contract annually. There is an option to exit at the end of each year. That is not our priority. Now it is sorted once, and when we have the facts together, Mr. Mateschitz will decide”

He signed off by discussing if they will consider going back to Renault and by when they will come to a decision regarding their future in F1

“Everything will be considered, if we have results, we'll see. Our plan is for the end of the year”
