We needed to use an oil based primer on the cedar shingles. We highly recommend thinning your paint a bit and using gloves.
In order to paint the dormers my husband Nick but a platform so that we could safely paint on the roof. This diy build worked really well and was perfect for holding our paint and boosting us up just enough to reach higher places. Definitely recommend making something like this so you can safely paint on the roof.
We bought all of our paints at Sherwin Williams even the ones that were Glidden/Home depot exterior house painting colors, Sherwin Williams simply matched their shades for us. Sherwin Williams offers their paints in 3 tiers, good better and best and we went their better line of paint. In this video I break down the cost of diy painting the exterior of our house from the paint samples to the primer and actual final paint that we used!
We ended up being able to complete this project - diy painting the exterior of our house - for a fraction of the cost of what it would have been had we paid a professional to come in and do it for us. The biggest thing to remember when painting the exterior of your home yourself it remember it will take a lot of time. As diy'ers we don't have a spray gun and so we had to paint the entire house by hand using paint brushes and rollers. Having a spray gun to paint your house would definitely make it go a lot of faster just remember you will have to add over spray preparation to paint prep measures.
Choosing our paint colors was fairly easy, we went almost all of our first choices. We have wanting to paint our house exterior for years and have admired other homes and have been getting ideas for years. The colors we chose are:
Foxfire Brown
Edamame
Pony Tail
All of the final house paint colors were latex based paint.
Coming up next on our channel will be the porch remodel/concrete pour and the big reveal of our home exterior make over!
