First, you need to be empathetic or understanding when responding to them. When talking to them, you are modeling to your kids how to act and behave, and the way you talk to them has a significant impact on their learning and ability to listen.
To be effective, speak in a gentle but firm command to end the behavior. Instead of pointing out what the child did wrong, show your child how to behave appropriately. It can be frustrating when they insist on their wrong behavior as being right.
