Thousands pay respects to George Floyd during public viewing and memorial in Houston

Thousands of mourners gathered in Houston, Texas at The Fountain of Praise Church on Monday for a public viewing and memorial for George Floyd.

Floyd, an unarmed Black man, died in police custody on Memorial Day after an officer kneeled on his neck until he became unresponsive. His death has sparked protests worldwide against anti-Black racism.

This also came as Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with second-degree murder in Floyd‘s death, was scheduled to make his first court appearance.

Floyd’s funeral will be Tuesday, followed by burial at the Houston Memorial Gardens cemetery in suburban Pearland, where he will be laid to rest next to his mother, Larcenia Floyd.
