As the Pandemic continues, more and more people require intensive care. As the need for intensive care worsens, Ventilators have been an important part of many patients recovery, but as recent statistics have shown; Ventilators pose a serious threat to the patients using them. The ventilator is used by blowing air into the body so that the lungs receive oxygen. Most doctors would think that supportive care, along with the ventilators would combat the respiratory illness. As difficulty of breathing seems to be the difference between life and death. Needless to say, if COVID patients are not responding well to ventilators as a last resort, doctors may have to try to find alternatives. As numerous studies have indicated, 90 percent of patients put onto a ventilator machine died. Drugs are expensive, and is also needed for the ventilators, which begs the question. What are the alternatives for battling COVID 19 if admitted by a doctor? Today we will be covering 6 medical devices that will likely be used as substitutes on the patient. It is important to note that I am not a medical expert, and this is solely for your entertainment and anything seen on this video should not be considered without consulting with a health care professional. Without further ado , NUMBER 6: Ventilator sharing. Ventilator sharing is exactly what it sounds like. Sharing air with another COVID 19 patient by use of the same device. An adapter is applied to the ventilator to ensure that air is being blown into both breathing tubes to accommodate for both patients on the Shared system. Sharing can go as high as 4 people. The patients however, need to have similar symptoms to one another in order for the shared ventilation to work at its best. Dr. Babcock, an Emergency physician, located in Detroit, goes in detail video on how modification of these ventilators are performed. she went on to discuss how the procedure is “feasible”, yet “off label” . A procedure that can save one or, decrease the odds of all four living. Its important to note that the monitoring of 4 patients is nearly impossible with one machine. Overall, Ventilator sharing is capped off at number 6 because of its accessibility, and ability to accommodate more than one person with minimal cost. The safety measures associated with the method, however sets it back tremendously. NUMBER 5: being able to supply oxygen in a convenient and mobile way Number 5 is going to go to the portable oxygen concentrator. Usually smaller in size, these devices are ideal because they have the convenience of moving around.
