The South Korean government has decided to keep its social distancing campaign in place through May 5th.
But some restrictions will be eased.
Kan Hyeong-woo reports.
The number of new coronavirus cases has come down to the single digits for the first time in about two months,... but South Korea is not letting down its guard against the pandemic.
"From tomorrow through May 5th, we are keeping the social distancing principle we have practiced so far... while easing some of the restrictions."
The Korean government has decided to maintain its administrative order in place for four kinds of facilities that tend to be crowded namely religious facilities, gyms, nightclubs and after school academies.
But the government's strong recommendation that they suspend operations will be lifted.
In a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters,... Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said operations will resume at outdoor public facilities where there's a low risk of infection.
He also hinted at the possibility of bringing back outdoor sports, but with no spectators in the stands.
"If we can keep up the current level of containment, we will go with 'everyday distancing' in which we go back to our daily routines, but with caution, from May 6th."
Depending on the virus situation,... the government will also consider the possibility of students going to school in person instead of taking classes online.
Prime Minister Chung said South Korea can always go back to the stronger social distancing measures if there's a spike in infections.
