The virus lockdown is speeding up the work on some construction projects while suspending others in the devastated city of Mosul.
STORY-LINE:
The lockdown in the Iraqi city of Mosul is helping some construction projects progress faster, while hindering other projects.
The municipality has obtained an exception from the governor to carry on several projects in the city, including road pavement.
Aasphalt paving machines and mixers are working easily and freely in the deserted streets of the city.
"Within moments, the machines arrive to the locations, the asphalt mixer arrives to the site at the specified time, and we don't face any crowds or traffic jams," says Eng. Adnan Mahmoud, head of projects at Mosul municipality.
However, the lockdown has paralysed the work of other construction projects in the city, especially bridges and highways.
"I mean we can't have waivers for all of these projects and the work cannot go on because it will cause a lockdown breach," says Eng. Radhwan al-Shahwani, the head of Mosul municipality.
The governor of Nineveh has declared a lockdown in the governorate on Mar. 17, as a preventive measure to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
Nineveh governorate has only had two confirmed cases of the virus.
The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Iraq is 1,318, with 72 deaths.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover.
