A Large Canyon-Shaped Hole in the Sun's Atmosphere Is Facing Earth - Aurora Alert

A Large Canyon-Shaped Hole in the Sun's Atmosphere Is Facing Earth - Aurora Alert A large hole has opened in the Sun's atmosphere, cleaving the Earth-facing side of the Sun with a gaseous canyon more than 600,000 km long. Images, based on data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), show the structure directly facing Earth on April 8th 2020.

Coronal Holes are regions where the Sun's magnetic field peels back and allows solar wind to escape. Solar wind is emerging at speeds between 600 km/s and 700 km/s. When this fast-moving material reaches Earth two days from now, it will likely spark polar minor geomagnetic storms.
High-latitude sky-watchers should be alert for auroras.

Low solar activity
Region 2759 remained spotless, but active, producing low level flares over the last 24 hours. There were no Earth-directed CMEs observed in available coronagraph imagery.
